California

Sonoma and Napa Valley

An easy drive from San Francisco we spent a few days here exploring the well manicured vineyards and estates.  I thought there was a lot of European influence here, especially in the number of ‘chateau’ style houses and long narrow tree lined driveways.  The wine tasting however is much more relaxed and it was lovely to be able to visit so many – all very warm and welcoming and the hosts very happy to share their local knowledge with you.

We stayed at the Renaissance Resort and Spa in Sonoma which had a great pool to jump in to at the end of the day – this was a life saver for the kids as clearly driving around vineyards wasn’t their idea of fun. It was also in a great location just a short distance to the main square which has some lovely restaurants and ice cream parlours.   The free shuttle bus from the hotel to the square in the evenings meant we could sample some of that great Californian wine!

This whole area is great to drive around and I would recommend day trips to Calistoga (hot springs), Healdsburg (great food) and Yountville while you are there.

Note: Not all the vineyards allow children so it’s worth checking first.

Try and stop at the Fremont Diner on your way.  The quirkiest place to stop for brunch. img_2520
