Sri Lanka

Cape Weligama and The Reef Villa and Spa

img_6153This has to be one of my favourite trips even though the circumstances around it weren’t the easiest.  Sadly my mum had died a few weeks before Christmas and the thought of spending the holidays at home trying to create festive cheer was impossible to imagine so we decided the best solution was to get away.

Sri Lanka had been on my list for a while but I had often discounted it as I wanted the kids to be old enough to remember it and to experience all it has to offer.  Finally this seemed like the perfect time and I was looking for an adventure – not too much time sitting on a sun lounger but somewhere with lots of distractions!

There is so much to see and do and we did a fair amount, visiting temples and elephant sanctuaries, tea plantations and whale watching, white water rafting and even watching a ceremony for initiating new monks!  It was perfect.

We stayed at two different hotels – both brilliant.  The first was the Reef Villa and Spa in Wadduwa.  A wonderful boutique hideaway tucked away from the hustle of the outside world.  It has beautiful planting and courtyards with ponds and lush palms and a lovely beach for playing in the waves.  Its small and very friendly and the staff made us feel very welcome even playing a game of cricket on the lawn with our cricket mad son!

The second hotel was the incredible Cape Weligama.  I would go back here tomorrow if I could.  Definitely in my top ten hotels of all time!!!  This is such a special place with the most incredible rooms – Yes there really is a pool outside the top bedroom window!!!! The location perched on top of a cliff overlooking the dramatic sea is just perfect and then add in the incredible service, food, staff beach oh and a few monkeys hidden in the trees and its hard not to fall in love with it all.
